This one-day workshop will provide an insight into how appellation and geographical indication systems have functioned and evolved over time. The local and global dimensions of the subject will be addressed, through the examples of French, Italian, Brazilian and Californian vineyards. Contributions will come from legal experts, historians and agronomists.

Jacques Gautier, INAO national inspector and secretary of the history committee, will speak at 3pm on "How can AOCs evolve in the face of present and future environmental challenges? ". In this context, he will discuss the actions implemented by the Institute to guarantee the sustainability of production under official signs of identification of quality and origin (SIQO).
