The program included meetings with defense and management organizations (ODG), producer visits and working meetings to discover the "Cassis de Dijon" GI, the "Comté" PDO and the Jura vineyards, in particular the "Marc du Jura" and "Macvin du Jura" GIs. These exchanges provided an opportunity to share French and European experience of geographical indications, and to pursue the development of GIs in Mongolia. This meeting was organized in partnership with the European Commission (DG for Agriculture) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty as part of TAIEX, a technical assistance and information exchange program. Representatives from the Mongolian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as from the Intellectual Property Office, took part in the collaboration and visits organized by INAO's Centre-Est territorial delegation. The visit follows on from meetings held in Brussels and at the Ministry of Agriculture.

Mongolian interest in the development potential of GIs

Mongolia has significant potential for geographical indications (GIs) to be recognized. These include the dairy sector, with cheeses, but also the emblematic fermented mare's milk. Mongolia also produces spirits, honeys and essential oils that could benefit from GI recognition. Participants were particularly interested in discovering French products in these sectors. The meeting served as a reminder of the importance of the international system for GI protection set up under the Geneva Act. Representatives from the European Commission and the French Embassy in Mongolia were also present,

L'INAO, acteur de la promotion du concept d'indication géographique

France, via the action of INAO in particular, and Mongolia have been developing cooperation around this GI concept for some ten years, which has already led to several results: protection of European appellations in Mongolia (notably Champagne); development of Mongolian GIs and recognition by the European Union of a first Mongolian GI, Uvs Sea Buckthorn.

This visit is part of the continuation of these relations and of the European Union's desire to reach an agreement on GIs with Mongolia, all within the framework of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty's strategy of influence. INAO is developing cooperative actions to promote the French system of official signs of quality and origin (SIQO), and to capitalize on the opportunities represented by geographical indications at international level. This mission is supported by a network of INAO experts. In particular, it enables us to:

  • Contribute to defending the commercial interests of French products under SIQO
  • Accompany third countries wishing to create or develop their own system
  • Strengthen the recognition of SIQO at international level
