The Comité national des appellations d'origine relatives aux vins et aux boissons alcoolisées, et des boissons spiritueuses meeting in session on February 6, 2020 approved the draft regulations concerning the classification of the "premiers grands crus classés" and "grands crus classés" of the "Saint-Émilion grand cru" appellation d'origine contrôlée with a view to drawing up a new classification operational from the 2022 harvest.

The principles of the 2012 classification regulations have been retained, with, in particular, a classification commission made up of independent members from outside the winegrowing region and a review of applications carried out by third-party, independent bodies themselves selected after the implementation of a public procurement procedure.
The main changes in the new regulations concern the distribution of scores for a "premier grand cru classé" examination: tasting and ageing aptitude are raised from 30% to 50% of the final score; characterization of the winery is reduced from 30% to 10% of the final score. As a reminder, the other criteria relate to the reputation of the winery's wine and its promotion, as well as the management of the winery. Adjustments have been made, for example in the absence of a vintage, which will result in a tasting score of zero. In addition, when tasting the last 10 vintages for grands crus classés, or the last 15 vintages for premiers grands crus classés, the lowest tasting note will be disregarded. For the rest, the changes made to the regulations are editorial and functional updates to the procedure in order to ensure, in particular, better publicity.
