Restaurants certified organic [CP]

Restaurants will now be able to be certified as organic on the basis of "product quantities" purchased. This certification comes in three categories depending on the percentage of organic products purchased by value: from 50% to 75% (1), from 75% to 95% (2), at least 95% (3).

The French specifications for organic commercial out-of-home catering, which have applied since 2012, have just been modified by interministerial decree. This change comes into force on January 1, 2020.

This change has two objectives:

  • Simplify access to certification for restaurants using mostly organic products;
  • Clarify for consumers the conditions for using the AB logo and the concept of organic catering.

To this end, alongside the existing "Dish" and "Menu" categories, a "Product quantity" certification based on the percentage of organic ingredients purchased (by value) is being created.
Restaurants that can justify this "quantity products"certification may be identified by affixing a statement relating to the percentage of organic ingredients purchased accompanied by the national AB logo.
This possibility open to the 3 categories is accompanied by the obligation to display a list of organic or non-organic ingredients and foodstuffs available in order to provide transparent information to the guest.
