This new regulation is part of the implementation of the European Commission's Sharp and Efficient Regulation program ("REFIT"), aimed at making European Union legislation simpler, less costly and future-proof. The regulation is intended to meet two general objectives:

  • Effective protection of intellectual property rights in the Union, including efficient registration processes, to reward producers fairly for the efforts they make,
  • Increase the use of GIs throughout the Union to the benefit of the rural economy.
