For 10 years, the Organisme de défense et de gestion (ODG) of the PDO "Pouilly-Fuissé" and the INAO have been working on the recognition of these premier crus of the appellation, studying in particular the notoriety, uses and natural characteristics of the parcels. As a result of this work, 22 "premier cru" climats have been proposed, representing 194 hectares (24% of the "Pouilly-Fuissé" PDO area), spread across the four communes of the appellation: Chaintré, Fuissé, Solutré-Pouilly and Vergisson.

Unlike Burgundy's other communal PDOs, the communal appellations of the Mâconnais region have not previously benefited from "premier cru" climats. The ODG of the Pouilly-Fuissé PDO was the first to seek recognition of the specific characteristics of certain localities, known as "climats" in Burgundy terminology. It applied for recognition as a "premiers crus" in 2010.

The "Pouilly-Fuissé" PDO is located in Saône et Loire, in the extreme south of the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. It is one of the five "communal" appellations of the Mâconnais. The "Pouilly-Fuissé" PDO concerns only white wines, produced within a delimited production area of around 800 hectares spread over 4 communes.

This recognition is a pledge to the future economic development of this region.
